1952, 07/30—Flying Discs—Buck’s Department Store—The Parsons Sun

Placed By: Buck’s Department Store
Subject: Flying Discs
Publication: The Parsons Sun (Parsons, Kansas)
Publisher:
Issue: 30 Jul 1952
Ad Size: Fractional Page
Color: B&W
Special Notes: This newspaper ad is interesting for two unrelated reasons. The first was a result of the reported sightings of “flying discs” around Washington, D.C. in late July 1952. There were people offering a $5000 reward for “a flying disc that actually flies.” The ad humorously announces that customers can have one for only 17 cents.
The second interesting fact is that this advertisement was run by Buck’s Department Store, an historic shopping destination located in downtown Wichita, Kansas. Buck's ran a discount clearance business to liquidate items that weren't selling well. It is reported that they cleared out the local inventory of Morrison and Franscioni's brittle tenite plastic Flyin-Saucer toys after the initial novelty sales slowed down. This is an ad for that sale. Ad copy is from newspapers.com.
