Special Notes: These are more of a kite than a flying disc as we know it today, but it may be the first toy to be labeled “Flying Disc.” Wirlwing Controllable Flying Discs by Wirlwing Flying Company first appeared in San Gabriel, Ca in December 1947, the year before Wham-O was founded less than a mile and a half down South San Gabriel Blvd. It was heavily advertised around the US in the Spring of 1948. There were newspaper articles telling readers not to be alarmed by the flying discs and that they would soon be as popular as yo-yos.
